Ornate ghost pipefish brings intricate red and white detail to your wall in this underwater photograph by Cobi Hay Yacobi. A black background sets off the fish’s narrow snout, patterned body and fine projections. Available in three portrait sizes, the canvas gives you a close look at a small marine animal whose outline can be difficult to pick out in its natural surroundings.
About the ornate ghost pipefish
The scientific name is Solenostomus paradoxus. This fish belongs to the family Solenostomidae and occurs in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific. Its branching outline and variable colors help it blend into its surroundings. Some individuals are dark; others have lighter markings, including red, yellow and white. It lives in sheltered coastal waters, often near coral or rocky dropoffs.
Although related to seahorses, the ornate ghost pipefish has two dorsal fins, and the female carries the eggs in a pouch formed by modified pelvic fins. These differences help distinguish the groups. The Australian Museum’s species account explains its identification, habitat and breeding anatomy.
Behind the photograph
In this photograph, the fish points diagonally downward, with its elongated snout extending toward the bottom of the frame. The lit red pattern and pale patches stand out from the surrounding darkness. Fine projections along the body and fins are visible against the black, while the eye provides a small, distinct point of detail.
A short exposure and underwater strobes illuminated the subject while keeping the background dark. This lighting separates the ornate ghost pipefish from its surroundings and gives the portrait its strong contrast. The image is a close study of shape and color, with space around the fish to follow its outline.

Your photograph on canvas
The ornate ghost pipefish photograph is printed on matte canvas with non-toxic latex inks. The canvas is stretched over an inner frame of sustainably sourced pine, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) deep. The photograph wraps around the edges. Hanging hardware is included, and the print arrives ready to hang without a decorative outer frame.
The portrait format suits a vertical section of wall beside a desk or between pieces of furniture. An optional outer frame is a separate styling choice: the wooden support inside the canvas is already included. You can keep the wrapped edges visible or choose an outer frame to coordinate with your room.

A place for it in your home or office
The room images show the ornate ghost pipefish canvas beside or above a walnut desk, with the smallest version resting on the desktop. Use those arrangements to compare scale in a home office or study. The dark background can work as a distinct rectangular accent against a light wall, with the fish’s red markings providing a smaller area of color.
