A humbug damselfish stands out among purple and gold corals in this Red Sea photograph by Cobi Hay Yacobi. Black and white stripes give the small fish a distinct outline against the reef. Printed on matte canvas in three landscape sizes, the image combines a recognizable subject with a background full of color and texture.
Meet the humbug damselfish
The fish is identified as Dascyllus abudafur, the Indian Ocean member of this familiar striped group. It belongs to the damselfish family, Pomacentridae. Its pale body carries three dark transverse bands, a pattern that makes the fish easy to pick out against a colorful background.
This species occurs in the Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, with a range extending east to the Sunda Shelf. It was once treated as the same species as the Pacific fish Dascyllus aruanus. Genetic and physical differences now distinguish them. One distinguishing feature is a gray to dark patch on the tail, compared with the generally white tail of its Pacific relative.
The FishBase species account for Dascyllus abudafur describes those differences and its distribution. Using the scientific name keeps this humbug damselfish portrait tied to the Indian Ocean species, even where older descriptions use the more familiar name of its Pacific relative.
Stripes within a colorful reef
The photograph places the fish among soft corals with purple and gold tones. Its simple pattern contrasts with the varied shapes around it. Look first at the bands on the body, then at the surrounding coral: the image offers both a close animal portrait and a view of the setting around that subject.
Keeping the reef in the composition gives the humbug damselfish context. The surrounding colors can be useful when choosing where to display the print, while the black and white pattern provides a detail that remains distinct within the broader scene. The horizontal format leaves room for both the fish and its surroundings.

From photograph to stretched canvas
Your humbug damselfish photograph is printed on matte canvas with non-toxic latex inks. The canvas is stretched over an inner frame of sustainably sourced pine, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) deep. The photograph wraps around the edges, and hanging hardware is included. It arrives ready to hang.
No decorative outer frame is included. The inner wooden frame supports the canvas and is already part of the print. You can leave the wrapped edges visible or choose a separate outer frame to coordinate with nearby artwork or furniture.

Above a bench, beside a seating area
The room images show the humbug damselfish canvas in a waiting room with an oak bench. The smallest version rests on the bench, leaning against the wall; the larger versions hang above it. These arrangements offer a starting point for a reception area, an entryway or a seating corner at home.
For an office wall, consider whether the print will be viewed from a desk or from the doorway. The striped fish supplies a clear detail, while the purple and gold reef introduces color around it. Leave enough space around the canvas to see its full outline alongside lamps, shelves or other pictures.
