An orchid dottyback brings a concentrated patch of purple to this Red Sea photograph by Cobi Hay Yacobi. Seen in profile beside the reef, the fish has a dark stripe through its eye and a clear outline against its surroundings. The photograph is available on matte canvas in three landscape sizes, from a small wall accent to a larger display above furniture.
A closer look at the orchid dottyback
The scientific name is Pseudochromis fridmani, a member of the dottyback family, Pseudochromidae. In the wild, the species is known from the Red Sea. Its maximum recorded length is about 6.3 cm, so the detailed view on canvas shows a fish that is small in its natural setting.
It lives around reefs at depths of about 1 to 60 meters, often beside vertical rock faces or beneath overhangs. Small holes provide nearby shelter. That relationship with the reef helps explain why the surrounding structure matters when looking at a portrait of this fish.
The FishBase account for the orchid dottyback documents its size, range and habitat. Those figures describe the species as a whole; they do not establish the size of the individual or the depth at which this photograph was taken.
Purple against the reef
The photograph shows the fish’s profile, fins and dark eye stripe beside the reef. Pink, brown, orange and yellow tones surround the purple body. The composition includes enough of the setting to let you compare the fish’s outline with the more varied textures around it.
Underwater lighting brings out the colors described in the original image. The orchid dottyback remains the focal point, while the surrounding reef adds detail beyond the fish itself. A place where you can both step back and approach the canvas will let you see these different parts of the photograph.

Your photograph on matte canvas
The orchid dottyback photograph is printed with non-toxic latex inks on matte canvas. It is stretched over an inner frame of sustainably sourced pine, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) deep. The image wraps around the edges. Hanging hardware is included, so the print arrives ready to hang.
No decorative outer frame is included. The internal wooden support is already fitted, and you can display the wrapped edges or add a separate frame to suit your room. For a group of photographs, plan the gaps between the prints as well as the dimensions of each canvas.

From a lounge wall to your home
The room images show the orchid dottyback canvas in a boutique hotel lounge above a long oak bench. The small version rests on the bench, leaning against the wall. These arrangements can also suggest a place in an entryway, a living room seating area or an office reception space.
Try the purple beside neutral furniture, or pick up one of the surrounding reef colors in a nearby cushion or object. Keep the canvas in a dry, ventilated room and avoid prolonged direct sunlight or high humidity. Use only a soft, clean, dry cloth for cleaning.
Explore color beneath the surface
Compare the orchid dottyback with the humbug damselfish canvas, where black and white stripes contrast with colorful corals. Read our guide to underwater white balance for more about color in underwater photography. Select your preferred size and add the print to your cart to order.
