A rock den frames a common octopus in this underwater photograph from Malta, with both eyes visible above a broad arm. Cobi Hay Yacobi photographed the scene on June 29, 2018. Stones and a shell occupy the foreground, while the dark opening provides contrast behind the animal. Choose a landscape canvas for a home office, dining room or larger seating area.
From Our Family Vacation in Malta
We photographed this octopus during a family vacation in Malta. We came across quite a few octopuses there, some mating and others looking at us curiously. This little octopus found a small hole in a rock and hid inside.
The octopus inside the rock den
The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, is abundant in the Mediterranean and usually hunts at night. It uses holes and crevices as shelter; females may gather shells and stones to protect their homes. Its eight arms bear suckers, and it has no internal shell. These features help explain how an animal with broad arms can occupy a small opening.
Camouflage involves changes in color, skin texture and body posture. The University of Michigan’s Animal Diversity Web account describes its sheltering habits and ability to blend into different surroundings. Here, the photograph shows the eyes, arm and rocky entrance without revealing the whole body.
Light, shadow and the foreground
The rock den creates a dark space behind the octopus, with brighter stones and a shell in front. Follow the edge of the opening to find the eyes, then look downward to the broad arm. The photograph holds several surfaces together: the animal’s skin, the surrounding stone and the separate shell shape.
From across a room, the opening and the lighter foreground give the composition its structure. A closer position makes the small details easier to examine. That is useful when choosing between a print above a desk and a larger canvas seen from a doorway or across a dining table.

Stretched canvas with wrapped edges
Your rock den photograph is printed on matte canvas with non-toxic latex inks. The canvas is stretched over an inner wooden frame of sustainably sourced pine, 0.75 in (1.9 cm) deep. The photograph continues around the edges, and hanging hardware is included. Your canvas arrives ready to hang.
No decorative outer frame is included. You can display the wrapped edges as they are or choose a separate outer frame to coordinate with other artwork. The wooden support inside the canvas is already fitted.
Three landscape sizes

Price and shipping
The rock den canvas starts at $69 USD. Shipping is free to the USA, Canada and Australia. For other eligible countries, shipping depends on canvas size and quantity and is shown at checkout before payment. The English shop does not ship to the EU, the EEA or the UK. Outside the USA, import duties or taxes may apply.
A place above your desk or sideboard
The room images show this rock den scene above a home office desk, on a terracotta dining room wall and above a green hotel lobby bench. The smallest print sits above a desk with a black lamp and open notebook. The middle size appears over a sideboard with fruit and candles; the largest spans the seating area.
Use those arrangements to compare scale with your own furniture. A paper rectangle matching the chosen dimensions can help you judge whether the canvas should stand alone or share the wall with another photograph.
